Business Journal Quote Re Twitter

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Got a nice blurb in the Business Journal today on social networking:

They asked, “What is your favorite social networking site?” and “How has it benefited you professionally?”

I answered:

Favorite social network: Twitter. True to Twitter form, I’ll explain why in less than 140 characters: Twitter is a fly on the wall: it’s a great source for small-talk topics. What I learn about your life there is a great conversation starter!

Abalastow Compendium

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I’m hosting an SEO competition as one of the projects in my UMN class. The students are competing against one another to get the highest Google search result for these key words:

At the moment, there are zero Google results for this set of words. I’m making this post to see how quickly it gets into Google.

RubyFringe Video

Monday, September 15th, 2008

My RubyFringe talk just became available at the InfoQ site.

It’s an hour long talk condensed into 30 minutes of fast talk about developers as entrepreneurs, ways of evaluating/trying out ideas, and — probably the strongest section of the talk — how to “hack the market.”

By now, what happened at RubyFringe is well known but is worth repeating: Pete, Meghann and all of Unspace produced a truly singular event. It was a genuine honor to have participated.

If you weren’t able to attend, keep an eye of for more RubyFringe videos at InfoQ and read the good recaps at Joey deVilla’s and Sean Miller’s blogs.

Minnesota iPhone Developers Group

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

During the early Ruby on Rails days the ruby.mn list became the home-base for a few dozen people exploring the then-new web platform. As we learned Rails we shared with one another and collectively got very good at building Rails applications.

Today, the iPhone is the new-new. Lots of stuff to explore, a somewhat steeper learning curve, and — by definition — everybody’s pretty new to it. We need another/a-new list, just like ruby.mn back then, where we can share, learns, ask dumb questions, etc. To that end, I’ve created the iPhone Developers of Minnesota Google Group/list. Hope to see you on it.
